Qualcomm announces new technology partnerships with Ford Motor Company and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles

“We all need food, water, energy and other necessities for life,” said Mr. Ford. “Since about 100 years ago, automakers have defined themselves as Detroit’s mightiest resource. That’s changing, as automakers leverage information technology to give automakers new opportunities to quickly respond to the needs of customers worldwide.”

“About a decade ago, we began looking at the challenge of delivering a consistent supply of local in-country chips while ensuring quality and performance,” said Mr. Hicham Zdurienci, vice president and general manager, automotive communications technologies, Qualcomm. “It’s a challenge that represents one of the key issues the global automotive industry faces as they continue to evolve their supplier ecosystems and close the gap between their long-term needs and our rapid pace of innovation.

“Qualcomm is pleased to work with Ford to expand the availability of our chipsets in the U.S. and greatly benefit Ford and other global automakers as they develop next-generation platforms, devices and software.”

Ford cars will feature Qualcomm chipsets built to provide robust connectivity between Ford vehicles and devices, such as smart phones and connected devices. Connectivity can be implemented in the vehicles themselves – Ford’s SYNC with MyFord Mobile is a software and hardware integrated system capable of supporting Bluetooth, USB, Wi-Fi, FM radio, GPS, navigation, hands-free and voice-activated smartphone communication, smartphone phone services and remote access to entertainment content. With Qualcomm’s Snapdragon mobile application processor, Ford also is able to provide connectivity with an expanded range of applications, such as mobile browsing, social media such as Facebook and Twitter, entertainment apps, remote operation and charging capabilities for electric vehicles and myriad location-based services.

Qualcomm will be demonstrating key advancements and new technology at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Jan. 15-22, 2019. Qualcomm will also demonstrate a host of technologies that will be showcased at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, Jan. 8-11, 2019, in Las Vegas.
